![]() ![]() ![]() Their website does recommend some similar programs for Linux ( KDirStat) and OSX ( GrandPerspective and Disk Inventory X) however, so just about anybody can take advantage of this graphical approach of analyzing their hard disk. As its name suggests, WinDirStat is only for Microsoft Windows. You can get the latest version of WinDirStat from their website at. The only downside I’ve found is it can’t analyze the space on a remote network drive, but that’s to be expected. Accessing WinDirStat from the apps (V:\) drive wds1.png Open the apps drive, scroll down and open the 'WinDirStat' folder and run windirstat.exe. It summarizes sizes of files and folders, making it easy to find large files or folders that may be affecting storage quotas. The best part is its free, both in price and licensing (it uses the GPLv2 Open Source License). WinDirStat is a program available on engineering lab computers and Citrix. There is even a portable version available that can run from a flash drive, so you don’t even have to find the room necessary to install the program on your hard drive if you don’t want to. For anyone who doesnt know, WinDirStat is a tool that scans your drives and shows you visually what is taking up space on your drives and lets you access and (importantly to this story) delete folders/files from within the program. Just hover your mouse over a large block on the graph and it will quickly tell you where most of your hard drive space is being used. With a glance, you can quickly and easily identify where the problem is and what you need to do about it. This is a great tool if your find yourself running out of space, and you’re not really sure it all went. ![]()
